Becoming an Oblate religious
and initial period of formation

The formation process to become an Oblate of the Virgin Mary involves several stages.
During each of these stages, the aspirant-postulant, novice or temporarily professed member is personally accompanied in his vocational discernment and the achievement of his personal growth objectives.

However, the oblate never ceases to form himself, thereafter, in order to respond ever better to the demands of his vocation as a religious and priest in the service of the People of God.

A first discernment

Anyone who feels a call should contact one of our communities. While continuing their studies or work, candidates meet regularly with an Oblate priest. The priest guides the candidate in personal prayer and initial vocational discernment.

The postulate

Candidates who discern a call to the Oblate religious and/or priestly life enter the postulancy. He then begins his studies in philosophy. He experiences community life, a more intense daily prayer life and continues his discernment. This period can last up to two years.

The novitiate

The novitiate year is totally dedicated to deepening Oblate spirituality and mission. We meditate on the life and works of Father Lanteri, Founder of the Oblates, and reflect on the meaning of the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. We delve deeper into the Oblate rule of life. A profound experience of prayer, in particular the thirty-day Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. It is at the end of this year of deepening and discernment that the candidate makes his decision to enter the Oblate family. He then makes his first vows and becomes temporarily professed.

Seminary years and temporary vows

Oblates preparing for the priesthood then begin their theological studies: Sacred Scripture, Church history, spirituality, morality, etc. During this three- to four-year period, in addition to their studies, temporary professed members experience the consecrated life in its personal, community and pastoral dimensions. For those called to be brothers (consecrated life, but not ordained priest), the course of formation is personalized according to the dispositions of each individual and the needs expressed by the O.M.V. congregation.

We are all religious, baptized people consecrated to the service of the Church and our Congregation. All are invited to serve, to give themselves to the mission defined by our Constitutions and Rules.

Perpetual vows and ordinations

After these three years of formation, the temporarily professed can make perpetual vows, then receive ordination to the diaconate and, a few months later, to the priesthood. He will exercise his ministry in a community of his religious province of origin, or leave for another country where the Congregation of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary is established.
